iruCandle

iruCandle is an adapter that allows you to mount Brompton and Rixen & Kaul carrier attachments onto the Coupler.

You can install carrier attachments with 26 mm spacing (Brompton) and 16 mm spacing (Rixen & Kaul). This enables you to secure Brompton-compatible and Rixen & Kaul-compatible bags behind the saddle.

With the optional coupler (included with iruka purchase), you can use iruCandle on bikes other than iruka.

We as bicycle manufacturers also try to meet users as much as possible at trade shows, test ride events, and other occasions. But in this respect, we are no match for dealers.

After all, dealers are in contact with users almost every day except on their closing days, constantly picking up requests, frustrations, and hints for business.

In 2025, at almost the same time, hints pointing to the same product came from different dealers.

First, the owner of our Lisbon dealer sent me a photo of a Brompton carrier attachment fixed to the Coupler with zip ties. He asked if there was a more secure way to mount it. Like me, he strongly believes that bicycles have real value not only when they ride well, but when they can carry cargo too. He is always exploring what kinds of bags and attachments best suit the bicycles he sells. In his view, the Coupler on iruka is a very good idea, but it can only be used with iruCart and iruCarry. If a Brompton carrier attachment could be mounted on it, then thousands of Brompton bags around the world could be used on iruka.

Then, when I visited a dealer in Yokohama, I was asked if there was any way to attach a basket to iruka. iruCatch is good, of course, but there are quite a few users who want to throw their things into a basket and enjoy cycling more casually. Since the bicycle is meant to fold, the basket has to be removable. In that sense, baskets compatible with Brompton and Rixen & Kaul are popular because they are easy to attach and detach.

The answer was obvious. We simply needed to make it possible to attach Brompton and Rixen & Kaul carrier attachments to the Coupler. It would not affect handling, and access to the bags would also be easy.

At first, I was thinking of an adapter that would fit over the shaft of the Coupler. Later, however, I realized that a simpler and better solution would be to remove the shaft and fix a cylindrical adapter in its place with the same bolt.

I originally intended to call the product simply “Carrier Attachment Adapter,” but it began to feel too plain. When the prototype was finished, it looked exactly like a short, stubby burnt candle, and the name iruCandle came to me at once.
